SFO's Gourmet Offerings

There's more reason to love San Francisco's redesigned Terminal Two, new home of American Airlines and Virgin America: the tasty fare you can grab for your flight. SFO searched out local producers and focused on healthy and sustainable food choices. You can't go wrong whether you stop by Napa Farms Market and pick up a wedge of triple-creme cheese from Cowgirl Creamery (our favorite!) or a fancy sandwich from The Plant Café Organic. There's also a wine bar and two cafés by celeb chefs Tyler Florence and Cat Cora. Don't forget to stop by the hydration station to fill up your water bottle:

If you're not rushing to the gate (that's about half of you, right?), look up and enjoy the art. Here's Topograph from Kendall Buster of Richmond, Va. in the entrance lobby.

American Happy Hour

American Airlines brought back its 5@5 promotion where cocktails and beer are $5 on flights leaving from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. The $2 discount on liquor and $1 discount on beer was popular when American did this last December, so they decided to bring it back. Select flights will have special margaritas all month as well in honor of last week's Cinco de Mayo. Would happy hour on a flight boost your spirits? We'd take the bait!Source URL: https://celebrityjetset.blogspot.com/search/label/airlines

Holiday Gift Ideas: Really Last Minute Ideas

    American Airlines Gift Card
You still have a day to choose pricey overnight shipping for your gifts (unless you find a free offer); but an easier option is to give an electronic gift certificate. We wish Santa would bring us an airline gift certificate. Virgin America and American, among others, offer gift cards and virtual gift cards via email.Source URL: https://celebrityjetset.blogspot.com/search/label/airlines

American Airlines No Longer on Orbitz

    American Airlines
We've all got our go-to search engine for booking airline tickets: Travelocity, Orbitz, Expedia and others. It's a convenient way to find the best deals; but only because the major carriers participate with the sites. It seems American Airlines and Orbitz couldn't agree on their partnership terms so for now, don't expect to see American's offerings there.

If you've already bought tickets for AA through Orbitz, those tickets are valid and if you need to make changes to your itinerary, do so with AA reservations, not Orbitz.

Since we often use American for our jaunts down to SoBe; we'll check out a rival comparison site for now. Our pick? Try Kayak.com which locates good deals on different sites then redirects you there. Looks like finding cheaper plane tickets just got more complicated. We're hoping other airlines don't follow American's lead.

Virgin America Swag Shop

It's a rare airline that's popular enough they can sell logoed products, but after winning Best Domestic Airline from both Condé Nast Traveler and Travel and Leisure for four years running, Virgin America is certainly the one that can do it. Its new Swag Shop recently launched and is filled with hoodies, tees, and unisex iPhone, iPad, laptop covers and more. Plus, you earn 1 Elevate rewards point for every $1 spent. This hoodie is our pick--it looks cozy and comfy for cross country flights.Source URL: https://celebrityjetset.blogspot.com/search/label/airlines

If you were one of the lucky ones to score an all you can jet pass, For $699 (plus taxes*) you can fly as much as you want on any route Jet Blue flies from September 7 to October 6. From there we would fly to New Orleans for some po' boys, Sazeracs and beignets (below).

Before heading to Austin for a music fix. We would finally take that trip we've been talking about to Cancun, before heading west. Our first stop on the second leg of our tour would be Phoenix to detox at a spa (below).

Bethenny Frankel on Airplane Food

The Most Hated Airline Fees

According to a story is USA Today, the fee that is most hated by airline travelers is for early seat assignments. While I'm certainly not a fan of any added fee the airlines throw at us, I have to admit, on my recent trip to Miami, I didn't mind paying an extra $16 each way for my seat on Spirit Airlines.

On the way down, I was able to get a window seat in row 6 with the center seat open. The plane on the way back was full, but I still snagged an aisle seat in the front. Both seats had ample leg room. It was well worth the $16 each way not to get stuck in a back row center seat.

What do you think? Do you have a most-hated fee?Source URL: https://celebrityjetset.blogspot.com/search/label/airlines

Shop at Sephora...

    Tarina Tarantino lip gloss
...and earn mileage points with Virgin America. We love Virgin America a little more each day. Now, when you shop at The Red Store, you earn mileage points at stores including Target, Macy's, Apple, and yes, Sephora. Even better news, those points don't expire.

Just think, if you buy online with your rewards credit card you can start earning points for your hotel stay, and before you know it, your trip is practically free. Plus, you'll have new clothes, makeup (including the gorge new Tarina Tarantino lip gloss) and a new iPod playlist for your trip!

Hassle of Airline Travel

It's no secret that airplane travel has lost its luster over the course of the past decade, if not years earlier. A new USA Today/Gallop poll found that 27 percent of those surveyed said it has gotten so bad, they would prefer to travel by train or car. For short trips, we agree. We can't remember the last time we flew between N.Y.C. and D.C. Just this past weekend, Annie took Amtrak on that route. The three hour ride with no long security lines, no pausing to take off shoes, dragging the laptop out of bag and and no limits on liquids, is far preferable to the 30 minute flight. That flight used to be faster, but with all the hassles of getting to and through the airport and the possibility of weather delays, it's just not worth it anymore.

What would we like to see the airports and airlines improve?
    • Improve security checks. There has to be a way to screen passengers before they even get to the airport. The alleged underwear bomber is said to have bought his one-way ticket in cash, two things that should have tipped off security.
    • Stop charging for the little things--checking bags, snacks, emergency exit row seats.
    • Offer complimentary movies and WiFi
    • Make flying fun again. We love the example of Virgin America's Holiday Cheer program.
    • Cuter uniforms. Admittedly, this is a small thing, but flight attendants who are wearing uniforms they actually like would help put the glamour back in air travel.
    • Make getting to the airport easier. We would love to see express rails from downtown directly to the airport, a la the Heathrow Express.

Virgin America Holiday Cheers Flights

Flying Virgin America today through December 26? Pay attention to see if you're on a special "Holiday Cheer" flight, when passengers will be treated to free cocktails and beers. Not only do you get the free booze, the first passenger to tweet or Facebook the flight scores a free roundtrip ticket anywhere Virgin America flies and an assortment of swag like wine-tasting tickets for two to Plumpjack wineries in Napa Valley, Yes to Carrots amenity kits, Snowflake Blue Microphones, VeeV Acai Spirit and a complimentary one-night stay at the Clift Hotel, in San Francisco. That ought to take the sting out of the hassle of holiday travel!

Free Wi-Fi for the Holidays

Here's a holiday present for all of you flying home or somewhere exotic for the holidays. Virgin America and Google are offering free WiFi on all flights from November 10- January 15. The service typically costs $5.95 and up.

We have yet to fly WiFi ourselves, but our most recent flight on Continental didn't even have personal TVs, which left us longing for a more tech-friendly plane. Enjoy!Source URL: https://celebrityjetset.blogspot.com/search/label/airlines

Virgin America's Fly Girls

Back when we were teens, we wanted to grow up to be flight attendants. Our mom talked us out if it. (Fortunately? Unfortunately? We're still not sure.) Regardless, we'll def be tuning into Fly Girls on the CW when it premiers later this year. According to one article, the show "will take place over eight half-hour episodes, looking at the on-the-go lives of five Virgin America flight attendants who jet to locations such as Las Vegas, Miami and New York." We can't wait!Source URL: https://celebrityjetset.blogspot.com/search/label/airlines

Air New Zealand’s Safety Video

Air New Zealand takes safety very seriously and they will stop at nothing to make sure we pay attention! By nothing – we mean nothing – because that’s exactly what they are wearing. The crew will be illustrating how to fasten your seat belt, what to do in an emergency, and where the exits are, covered in nothing but body paint. As of June 29th, this new safety demonstration video is live on all 737 domestic flights. As part of their “Bare Essentials” Ad Campaign, they have a YouTube Air New Zealand safety video, which has already gotten over 2 million hits. Whether or not you think this is outrageous, it certainly will get your attention. This time around, we watched and listened to the video instead of our usual routine of finding a comfy spot in our seats and flipping through a magazine.

It should also help break the ice on the Air New Zealand's Matchmaking Flight this fall.

A few months back, we got to see artistically painted bodies in person at the MAC Cosmetics party. WARNING: The artistically painted bodies didn’t leave, um, quite as much to the imagination.

Airline Fees

Confused about which airlines are charging fees to check bags and score that coveted exit row seat? Or how much it will cost you to book that awards ticket you thought was free? So are we! Thanks to USA Today for compiling this handy and up-to-date list of airline fees. Air New Zealand: On Our Radar Air New Zealand's Matchmaking Flight

For those of us who are single, it is sometimes difficult to go on vacation or wander the streets of a foreign city watching couples walking affectionately hand in hand. However, our single prayers have been answered! Air New Zealand has created a flight called the Matchmaking Flight – exactly what it sounds like!

It’s an easy concept; you sign up and pick who you want; an American, a kiwi, or a Canadian. You are paired with a partner either on the flight over to New Zealand or when you land. You can create a profile of yourself on the Matchmaking Flight website to connect with the travelers six months before your trip. There is a pre-flight gate party, in-flight games and entertainment, and not to mention that you might be sitting next to your soul mate. Who wouldn’t mind rubbing elbows with a Rusell Crowe look-a-like for a long flight?

Flights leave from Los Angeles on October 13, 2009 and cost $780. All you have to do is de-plane, freshen up, and explore New Zealand with a new date! Get ready to share your peanuts…Source URL: https://celebrityjetset.blogspot.com/search/label/airlines

Cheap Airfare

Thanks to Jennifer for this tip! When we book our trip to Mexico in May, we're going to use Kayak. It's a travel search engine in the same vein as Travelocity or Orbitz in that it searches for the best deal on airfare, hotels, and rental cars; but it links you directly to the cheapest option (sometimes the airline itself, sometimes an agency), saving you the $5.00 or so that other search engines take as their share.

For instance a flight from D.C. to Cancun is $303 on Kayak and $310 on Orbitz. To get the cheaper fare Kayak links directly to United. That saving is worth a margarita on the beach, no?

For more information on Kayak, check out their site.Source URL: https://celebrityjetset.blogspot.com/search/label/airlines

Holiday Airfares on Sale

Jet Blue's New Food Court at JFK

New York Magazine gives us a sneak peek at the new food court at JFK's long-awaited Jet Blue terminal that is set to open on October 1. We love that the restaurants are after security--we can't relax till we've gone through that whole rigmarole with our liquids and laptop. This makes getting to the airport five hours early and delayed flights a little more bearable and may just be enough to get us to switch our allegiance from Virgin America for our cross country trips.

Our faves are the modern Deep Blue:

Vintage Airline Commercials and Ads

    American Airlines Vintage Ad
We're glued to Mad Men with the rest of you on Sunday nights and were just as bummed as Don and crew when Sterling Cooper didn't win the American Airlines account. For those who can't get enough of the sexist times or don't really believe it was as bad as the show makes it out to be, check out this compilation of humorous airline commercials from Travel and Leisure. Fortunately, enough time has gone by that we can laugh at the once offensive "Take Her Along" ad from United Airlines where women plead with their hubbies to be allowed to go on the trip. Really? We mean, REALLY? Thank God we live in a time when women can travel--with and without their men!
